To, one day in the very distant future, build a Chevy C10 to be better than a Land Rover.

Kinja'd!!!

“How will you accomplish this crazy internet creature?”

Thank you, I appreciate you concerns comrade.

First of all, what are Land Rovers known for? Well their mild off road machines, not hardcore rock crawlers, and are luxurious and easy to drive.

Well I’ll start with the engine since that’s kind of the “Heart” of the vehicle so to speck.

“Ok, small block Chevy?”

NO! far to “American” it needs to be something relatively compact and sophisticated. I propose a supercharged GM 3.8/3800 as found in the park avenue and other GM models. Although crude by European standards I’d imagine it’s more lightweight than a cast iron 350. While the supercharger would provide the torque necessary for a proper truck.

“Ok how are you going to make it easy/ier to drive?”

First of all by installing a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! steering rack to make it handle better along with frame reinforcements to make the vehicle more stable and let the suspension do stuffs better.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

“Well okay, but you still have a suspension that was designed when people though weed made you a psycho.”

Yes, but today we can do better. With !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! just like a Land Rover! So that why you can lower for better handling dynamics on the street and raise it to stock height or higher for mild offloading expeditions.

Kinja'd!!!

“Ok not bad. But how in the world are you going to make it as luxurious as a Land Rover?”

Well by Gyropean standards, yeah it’s nearly impossible, but have faith comrades for it’s 2017 and us Americans of much less refined tastes. Espically those of us who were reared in East Texas. First of all with the 3.8/3800 there’ll be plenty of room for A/C so win. Then hack up the dash till you can fit in a touchscreen double din that’s capable of displaying maps and can sync to your phone to pump your awesome jams.

Kinja'd!!!

Have a small amp and some kick ass speakers and your halfway there! Now for the other half. Fortunately bench seats are relatively easy to reupholster. So just pick some nice cushions and soft fabric and boom, luxury!

Kinja'd!!!

So what do you think Oppo? Better than a Land Rover or way better than a Land Rover?

All you’d have to do is make it run.....

I approve of the build though.

Although I think it should have a 454 with an 8-pack intake and webers.

Or a tunnel ram with dual quads.

But the super charger is necessary for the sophistication and class!

True.

to make it a true land rover you’ll have to poke holes in the bags of the rear air suspension so you can look like this until you can get money to swap it to springs.

Kinja'd!!!

Then you’ll need some component of the ABS to not work so your dash looks like so

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t think the 3800 overheats a lot, so you may need to rethink the motor choice.

basically buy one truck for each part. engine....... trans and 4x4 box...... 4x4 axles....... body......... frame.

youre overthinking it. get an inline 6. has about as much torque at idle as a 454. find a manual transmission and transfer case. round up enough clean fenders to skin the truck out. leave the standard power steering box, dirt simple.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

and so long as you are building a dream truck, start rounding up the parts you know that you want to use. before too long you will have a pile large enough to build it........

i recently found my dream 4x4 truck. it took me about 5 years of searching, but i finally managed to turn one up.

I didn’t think about an inline 6. Which one is it exactly that has as much torque as a 454 at idle?

the 292 if i am not mistaken.........

Kinja'd!!!

the 454 makes more overall torque, but the inline makes more AT IDLE. and inlines can lug down and keep pulling at idle......... not trying to change your mind, just offering suggestions.

So, you’re suggesting a Buick 215 v8 with a supercharger maybe?

Naw that’s a good suggestion. And it’s not like this is going to happen anytime soon lol. However I’d like something that doesn’t die off at the top (so it behaves more like a modern car) but it’s probably possible to build an I6 to do so.

gearing is your friend. the highest gears i have ever seen in a 4x4 truck were 2.76:1 differential gears. from there you can figure a crawl ratio. BUT on the highway, it would chug right along at a decent speed. with a manual 4 speed, you can have a compound 1st gear (6.50:1) and the 4x4 case reduction 1.96:1(np205) and with the 2.76 diff, STILL have a decent slow crawl ratio of 35.16 :1.........

I’m sure it does... but who builds a 454 and leaves in the stock cam ;)

My 350 has an RV cam, and i sure it could pull the guts out of the straight 6.

its a matter of where you intend to use the engine. if youre just going to putter around at idle most of the time, and not interested in spending money rebuilding more than half the engine with aftermarket bits, the inline isnt too bad.

the O.P. had mentioned that he wasnt interested in the heavy sbc, because he wanted something with more “sophistication, and relatively compact” and the sbc was “far too american”

dont misunderstand me. i likes my sbc. it has parts availability second to not much else, at good prices. i have even put together one or few...... AND i like the big bocks too, tons of grunt once you get rolling........

i have gotten to see a bunch of “mostly stock” inline 6, used in work trucks, and heavy equipment. they can get down and pull, and keep pulling in low rpms.

just thought it was an INTERESTING alternative......

Kinja'd!!!1

sure. i’m just saying the idea “once they get rolling” is kind of a mis-characterization, sound like you probly know already that it’s all about cam choice.

Besides, the inline six and sbc are comparable weight. You only see big weight gain going to a bbc.

YES, cam choice, and being very honest about how you intend to use the engine. that way you can round up the rest of the parts to work in your powerband. stuff like intake, heads(valve size, runner size), how small of a carb are you going to need to hunt down.

you can make a real peppy engine, if you dont get greedy and start buying “race parts”that work in rpm/lift ranges that youre not going to see but once or twice, IF EVER.

the weight is closer than you might think. an all iron sbc weighs right at 575 lbs. and the inline is JUST under it at 550 lbs. big blocks, from what i can recall are just a shade under 700 lbs.

they are both great engines, depending on how you package them out. a nice rev happy sbc with some fairly deep gearing, or even a torque oriented sbc with moderate gearing. could even gear the inline with highway gears (op was talking about highway driving), and lug it on the trail in low range at idle.

and sometimes i do mis-characterize things from time to time. glad theres folks here to keep me sharp...... i just like to build things outside my comfort zone from time to time....... can optimize just about anything, putting a mind to it........

Kinja'd!!!

i pretty near own stock in smallblocks.......

its a “home-made” chevy 302 bored to 305(4 inch bore, 3inch stroke). it gives up its torque for mid and upper range power. the interior is still very much in the works........ today would of been a floor day if it hadnt rained, or wiring.......

Kinja'd!!!

i try to look for the “best” tool for the job, not just the tool that i like best.

Kinja'd!!!

and i have a hard time not recommending the smallblock too.....
